Tiki Bongo Flashback!

You're soooo lucky! Today I've got some groovy, mid 60's, French, get-up-n-move vibes for you that'll remind you that yes - it's still summer! I'm thinking these will work nicely with just about anything you might have going on after the sun goes down today. Come to think of it, and although I haven't tested them sitting around the pool (yet!) these would go absolutely perfect with a nice poolside cold one.

Either way, here's hoping at least one of these French gems make it on to your permanent Saturday night mix. I've got this twistin' trio in both my Bohemian Mai Tai Jet Set playlist and the Official A Night at The Fabulous Tiki Room playlist.

First up, from 1966, the happy-go-lucky Twist A Go Go from Eddie Warner & les Nelson Boys (256 kbps 3.7MB)

Next, a sweet little finger snappin' vibes and keyboard combo circa 1964 that's really anything but what you might expect with a title like Ah! Quel Surf!, dig if you will Ah! Quel Surf! This is from Orchestre Jean Tordo off of the C'est Si Bon 45 (256 kbps 3.8MB)

"You gotta live like you're on vacation." Sir Diamond David Lee Roth

And finally, for my buddy Jackie, (and perhaps you or anyone else that just might need a song to make 'em smile and thank their lucky stars for everything they've got) a hip shakin' 1965 ditty called Forgeron Twist by Les Star Twisters. This is a single from The Dansons avec Les Star Twisters et Viviane Chantel LP. (256 kbps 4.1MB)

And, remember - Summer's not over yet!

Glory To The Blanks

Ok, flashback...

So, it's 1992 and my buddy Kevin Paetzel, (a fellow Pixies, They Might Be Giants music freak and an amazingly talented copywriter currently working at the Richards Group in Dallas), so Kevin turns me on to this wicked awesome little album called Sweet Love by The Blanks from Houston, featuring Kevin's brother Karl, or Kar as he's know in context with the band. It was actually a cassette tape, not an album.

Sweet Love was produced, written, and performed by The Blanks, recorded at Drum Room Studios, Houston, Texas and Red Oak Studios, Austin, Texas and then mixed at Red Oak Studios, Austin, Texas.

My favorite/lucky numbers are 61 and 9 so I especially dig the fact that the album was finished on the 9th day of the 9th month of 1990.

Long story short, I fall in love with Sweet Love, and fall head over heels with the infectious and incredibly perfect song Sweet Sally! Sweet Sally, features both Kar and the sexy guest vocals of the mysterious Miss Red Sugar and has been stuck in my head for the last 17 years!

So, after sharing my love for Sweet Sally with Kevin who then told his brother Karl about it I was super stoked when Karl asked me if I wanted to contribute my version of Sweet Sally to a tribute album called Glory To The Blanks!

Sweet! Since my first listen I'd been trying to learn the song on my acoustic doing both the male and female vocals and so yeah, I'd love to try and record it!

So Karl comes in from Houston one weekend back in 1995 and we set up his 4 track recorder in my little tree house apartment on Thelma in Olmos Park and after a few beers and about an hour or so of recording we finished my contribution to Glory To the Blanks! This was before I came up with the name Tiki Bongo and so it's under the name Area 51 on the lp.

Anyway - I still totally dig the original Sweet Sally even more now and just this morning Karl sent me the long lost version of my take of Sweet Sally and so here it is in all it's lo-fi glory complete with whistling! I've also posted the priceless original Blanks version so you too can experience the magic of Sweet Sally! Enjoy!

The Blanks: Sweet Sally
Area 51: Sweet Sally

Thanks again to Kevin for sharing and Karl for including me!

Glory to: The Blanks!

HMK Mystery Stream Episode: 081 H2o de Março

Check out the latest HMK Mystery Stream: Episode 081 H2o de Março.

I played my Tiki Bongo song Let's Go Back 2 The Tiki Room for my bud Tom Rehkopf aand he said it reminded him of The Waters Of March.

What do you think? Kinda freaked me out a bit, they're really not the same at all but there's something there, other than the word "mud" that seems to bring these two songs together.

Tourfilter

Tourfilter is one of those innovative new business ideas that came about because a smart entrepreneur wanted to solve a personal problem. Founder Chris Marstall kept missing gigs by bands he liked, and needed an easy way to track concert listings. When he couldn't find anything user-friendly or complete enough, he built his own service.

The concept is simple: a user sets up a (free) account, picks his/her own city, and then enters all of the bands he or she would like to see in concert. Twice a day, Tourfilter's software crawls through live music venue listings for each city it covers. If it comes across a band people are tracking, it sends them an email, and lets them receive show updates via RSS or iCal.

Entering a list of bands is fast and easy, with the system giving instant recommendations based on other users' lists. Users can also listen to thousands of MP3 and RealAudio tracks by bands with upcoming shows, and browse recent music blog listings, organized by band.

Think of it as a simple concert and band tracking tool that aims to become the Craigslist of live music listings.

I've got mine set up for Austin...

Miguel Top 5+ Singles 2005

In no particular order, here are my Top 5+ Songs of 2005. This might change as the year ain't quite over yet...

Buttercup: Cutting Dasies from the debut Buttercup lp.

Toby Keith: Good As I Once Was from his pretty decent Honky Tonk U release.

Portastatic: I Wanna Know Girls from Bright Ideas (Mac also released an acoustic version of the official release - Ideas for Bright Ideas. This is the awesome acoustic version.)

The Magic Numbers: Love Is A Game from their cool premier self titled The Magic Numbers album.

Plan To Stay Awake: Deathray Davies from The Kick And The Snare. Go Buy This Now!

Steve Earl: The Revolution Starts Now off of the self titled album.

Now I'm A Stick Figure: John Dufilho fom his first official solo album. Get It Here!

I Love Math: Shape Of The Sum from the yet to be named forthcoming release...

Sir Paul McCartney Jenny Wren, a Rocky Racoon for the new millenium from the amazing Chaos and Creation in the Backyard lp. 25 years ago yesterday, we lost John Lennon. Imagine what a John Lennon album might sound like in 2005. Fucking idiots with guns.

Tiki Bongo: Let's Go Back (2 The Tiki Room) from the hardly antcipated forthcoming Nearest Faraway Place... If you like this you might dig my first Tiki Bongo video: Uh Huh Oh Yeah!

Then again, you might not. Anyway...

Peace,

Miguel
