Sal Mosca: Unsung

If a piano plays in a room and no one hears it, did it really make music?

Legendary jazz pianist, Sal Mosca would say it did. In this intimate look into a master’s life, SAL MOSCA: UNSUNG presents a portrait of man who chose to sacrifice fame and glory for the purity of his art. In doing so, Mosca lived a hermetic life in a dark studio where musical magic was made daily.

Mosca, who studied with cool jazz guru, Lennie Tristano, played and recorded with greats such as Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Max Roach, and Sarah Vaughn. But after the 1950’s he chose a sedentary life in which his art would never be compromised, settling to teach his craft while wowing audiences when he would emerge for infrequent performances.

This is the first and only film of Mosca who died shortly after its completion. Even at age 80 Mosca’s fingers glide effortlessly over the keys, displaying a freedom in music which is rare. Unfettered by big record labels, he achieved an unbridled method of jazz improvisation. His ambition to “get into himself” rather than go after capitalistic gains is startlingly bold in an era where dollars seem the main measure of success.

Sal Mosca was an un-sung genius, and will now be heard.

Welcome to filmanthropy!

Huge thanks to the enterprising folks over at SnagFilms!

Enjoy and dig deep if you're able!

Peace,

Ringo's Sgt. Pepper Drum Sells for Over 1 Million

The drum skin used on the cover of The Beatles' Sgt Pepper album has sold for £541,250 ($1.07m) at auction in London - almost four times the estimate.

John Lennon's lyrics for Give Peace a Chance sold for £421,250 ($833,000) at Christie's rock memorabilia sale. The lyrics were handed to comedy writer Gail Renard at Lennon and Yoko Ono's Montreal "bed-in" in 1969. The entire collection, which included photos never seen in public before, fetched more than £1.5m ($2.97m)

A pair of tinted prescription sunglasses belonging to Lennon, which the singer wore for the cover of the single Mind Games, raised £39,650 ($78,400).

Some of the other items which were to due to be sold at the auction:

Recordings of the Jimi Hendrix Experience performing at the Woburn Music Festival in July 1968 went for £48,050 ($95,000), a Marshall amplifier used by Hendrix in concert fetched £25,000 ($49,400) and a pair of his stripy flared trousers made £20,000 ($39,550). A 1967 Gibson guitar, formerly owned by Pete Townshend of the Who, sold for £32,450 ($64,200).

Memorabilia from acts including Ella Fitzgerald to Madonna were also auctioned in the sale.

Syracuse University Scores 50 Tons of Vinyl

A vast collection of 78 rpm records is being donated to Syracuse University by the estate of a prominent New York City record shop owner.

The more than 200,000 records represented the entire inventory of "Records Revisited," a landmark Manhattan store owned by Morton Savada, who died in February of lung cancer at age 85.

The collection, valued at $1 million, weighs 50 tons and represents more than a half-century of American music history.

Included are recordings from 1895 to the 1950s, with big band, jazz, country, blues, gospel, polka, folk, Broadway, Hawaiian and Latin among the genres. The collection also contains spoken-word, comedy and broadcast recordings, and "V-disks," which were distributed as entertainment to the U.S. military during World War II.

"It's a treasure trove of that era," said Joe Lauro, founder of Historic Film Archive, whose holdings include more than 40,000 musical performance clips and which holds exclusive rights to such famous shows as "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert."

I love the fact that Savada often lent his 78s to movie and music producers rather than selling them, and never sold the last copy of a recording because he regarded his collection as an archive, not an inventory.

"He was more interested in making you a $5 copy on tape than selling you a record. He considered himself a keeper of history more than a collector," Lauro said.

Lost Beatles Interview

For 44 years a canister of film had been stored in a damp garage in South London; unopened, unloved and almost thrown away.
But, finally, somebody took a look inside - and realised they had unearthed a piece of pop history.

This is the story of a lost Beatles interview, produced by Howard Shannon - which is to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday for the first time since it was originally recorded.

The nine-minute interview took place in the studios of Scottish Television on Thursday, 30 April, 1964 and airs at on Tuesday 1 July, and again at on Saturday 5 July, check out BBC for more info.

And who knows, you might just might find it here at Necessito La music next time you visit...

Shaq vs. Kobe, the Ringtone

Ha Ha!

This is genius.

Last week, a viral video insult surfaced that reignited the supposedly settled feud between NBA stars Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. The short version is that Shaq smacked Kobe down in a freestyle rap, which centered around the nasty refrain, "Kobe, tell me how my ass tastes."

And proving that nothing on the internet ever truly dies, that viral refrain has in turn inspired a ringtone.

Grab it while you can over at: FunMobile or better yet...

Turn it up! Kobe how my ass taste?

Go Spurs!
