Crocodiles at SXSW 2012
Ok, now back to the west coast. Man, these guys rock. Check out the awesome new single they closed out the set with at Urban Outfitters backyard stage, from the totally cool San Diego fuzz-rock band Crocodiles, dig Sunday (Psychic Conversation #9) from the soon to be released Endless Flowers album, sounding like it's fresh from 1989!

Habibi at Beauty Bar SXSW 2012
This time from the east coast, one of the cooler, funner bands I caught during SXSW last week, Habibi from Brooklyn, a super sweet, all girl, lo-fi surf pop band that kinda remind me of Brian Wilson's The Honeys from back in the mid 60's.

Are You Middle Class Enough?

In 1985 Memphis studio group The Dog Police recorded a hilarious video showcasing their canine approch at rock music. Also known The Tony Thomas Trio, the group featured Tony Thomas, Tom Leanardo and Sam Shoup.
Not sure how or when I first scored this but it's pretty dang genius if you ask me...
Patricia, fetch me my lawn chair won't you please?
Ladies and gentlemen, Dog Police: Are You Middle Class Enough?
Well, are you?
Cheers!

The Blue Whale

Dark Shadows Fun Facts: The Blue Whale
The Blue Whale is a pub in Collinsport. It was a very popular hang-out for most of the town's denizens. The same bartender could always be seen working, no matter the time of day.
It is unknown when the Blue Whale was established, but it did exist in 1897 and it appears to be in the same location as The Eagle was from 1796 to at least 1940. Given that Sophie Baker wanted Barnabas Collins to take her back there, it would appear its reputation in 1897 was not much better than that of The Eagle in 1795. By the late 1960s it was a much more reputable place.
The price of a beer in 1967 was 15¢. There was also a jukebox in the corner which cost 25¢ per song. According to Burke Devlin, the Blue Whale served the best lobsters in the world.
The 45-rpm recording of Quentin's Theme had as its B-side Number One at 'The Blue Whale', the background music played at the bar. (London Records - HLD10283 - 1969 - The Charles Randolph Grean Sounde).
So hey, surf's up in Collinsport - crank it up and dig Back At The Blue Whale!
In episode 3, a phone booth is seen in the Blue Whale, however after that point, all phone conversations are made with the payphone on the left wall.
The blue whale is A BUG WHALE .

Wicked Nice iPhone Speaker

Dig the totally natural alternative to electronically amplified iPhone sound docks.
Using only the iPhone's built in speaker, the Koostik. acoustically amplifies the volume output by 2 to 4 times!
Think of a solid body guitar that's unplugged-you strum the strings and get a little bit of sound. But if those strings are placed over a hollow body guitar and you strum the strings-you suddenly have acoustic music. The same principal is at work with Koostik.. Simply place your iPhone into the center cradle, and immediately you hear your music acoustically amplified, way cool.
The Koostik is designed so it works with all generations of iPhone. All of the external buttons and controls of the phone are easily accessible while the phone is docked in the Koostik.
Very nice.

Sal Mosca: Unsung
If a piano plays in a room and no one hears it, did it really make music?
Legendary jazz pianist, Sal Mosca would say it did. In this intimate look into a master’s life, SAL MOSCA: UNSUNG presents a portrait of man who chose to sacrifice fame and glory for the purity of his art. In doing so, Mosca lived a hermetic life in a dark studio where musical magic was made daily.
Mosca, who studied with cool jazz guru, Lennie Tristano, played and recorded with greats such as Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Max Roach, and Sarah Vaughn. But after the 1950’s he chose a sedentary life in which his art would never be compromised, settling to teach his craft while wowing audiences when he would emerge for infrequent performances.
This is the first and only film of Mosca who died shortly after its completion. Even at age 80 Mosca’s fingers glide effortlessly over the keys, displaying a freedom in music which is rare. Unfettered by big record labels, he achieved an unbridled method of jazz improvisation. His ambition to “get into himself” rather than go after capitalistic gains is startlingly bold in an era where dollars seem the main measure of success.
Sal Mosca was an un-sung genius, and will now be heard.
