From un-sexy Worcester, Massachusetts - I'm totally loving Dom!

Dig the track Damn from their super fresh, August 2011 Family of Love EP. Produced by Nicolas Vernhes (Animal Collective, Björk), the EP made the Top 10 College Radio chart September 2011. The band played Lollapalooza 2011, receiving critical acclaim and was asked by Perry Farrell, the festival founder to open for Jane's Addiction.

Not bad for a brand new band who's twenty-two-year-old leader Dom that grew up in foster care bouncing around with no real family to speak of. The fact that he found and chose a musical direction to battle his demons makes me love the soul, energy and sound of this band all the more.

File Under: fun, fuzzy, low-fi, distortion, sweet, broken Casio keyboard lines, DIY aesthetic, art school, upbeat, sunny rhythms, pop music, photography, soundtrack.

Dark Shadows Fun Facts: The Blue Whale

The Blue Whale is a pub in Collinsport. It was a very popular hang-out for most of the town's denizens. The same bartender could always be seen working, no matter the time of day.

It is unknown when the Blue Whale was established, but it did exist in 1897 and it appears to be in the same location as The Eagle was from 1796 to at least 1940. Given that Sophie Baker wanted Barnabas Collins to take her back there, it would appear its reputation in 1897 was not much better than that of The Eagle in 1795. By the late 1960s it was a much more reputable place.

The price of a beer in 1967 was 15¢. There was also a jukebox in the corner which cost 25¢ per song. According to Burke Devlin, the Blue Whale served the best lobsters in the world.

The 45-rpm recording of Quentin's Theme had as its B-side Number One at 'The Blue Whale', the background music played at the bar. (London Records - HLD10283 - 1969 - The Charles Randolph Grean Sounde).

So hey, surf's up in Collinsport - crank it up and dig Back At The Blue Whale!

In episode 3, a phone booth is seen in the Blue Whale, however after that point, all phone conversations are made with the payphone on the left wall.

Kiss Rules! I actually went back in time for a few hours last night and had a cool time at the Scout Bar in San Antonio with my Madison High School buds Robert and Edward. You'll have to excuse the quality of these iPhone shots. On second thought, the more I look at them I think I'm actually kinda digging the old school look and feel of these captured moments, you know, the hazy ass lighting complementing the bumpy blurry immediacy of it all, just like back in the day.

As for the actual show itself, I wanted the best and I got a damn fine example of an awesome effort by Destroyer. Lots of Kiss Alive! of course some Destroyer along with a few from Rock & Roll Over and Love Gun. Could have done without some of the later Lick it Up, Love It Loud, I Was Made For Lovin' You material though.

All said, awesome show, lame crowd though. The staff at Scout Bar was friendly and cool, but it really sucked that they had their club-within-a-club disco bullshit blasting with it's doors open during the entire Destroyer show. Stupid and totally direspectful to the band.

And although this was only my second time at Scout, the half filled room sounded only ok at best when standing in front of the sound board. At my first show, Riot a few months back, the room was packed and the sound was excellent. The half filled room sounded really flat, almost like an outdoor gig and the poor turnout was ultimately a drain on the overall energy and vibe as well.

I stood up front for the first few songs until this super spaced out double BudLite fisted idiot decided that tonight it was his turn to be Asshole Of The Day while the couple he was with, two metal mental midgets who were also probably drunk before lunch, an incoherent chick and her stumbling "Baby" as she called him, a wasted but polite man that grew progressively excited about seeing four guys dressed up like Kiss and kept yelling at Destroyer's Paul Stanley while waving a guitar pick from a Kiss show in Austin 8 years ago incessantly screaming "I'm the man! I'm the Man!" What a fucking dumb ass.

I digress... Destroyer Rocks! If you dig old school Kiss and you get the chance don't miss Dallas' Destroyer!

And speaking of Kiss...

That's right, dig my Ace Frehley signed Destroyer album! A funny thing happened while getting this signed...

Ok. True story.

I took this shot back in November of 1994. It's a group of French school children singing Frère Jacques, in Paris, right next to the Eiffel Tower. Pretty Disneyesque, in an It's A Small World After All kind of way, I know, but... So, fast-forward to 2008, I'm scanning the print, a print I developed in like, 1998, in the makeshift darkroom of my bud Patrick Gill, an awesome and primitive set up in Patrick's detached garage behind his flat in San Antonio. Anyway, so I'm scanning the print and The Beatles' Paperback Writer comes out of my speakers via my first iPod, Lani Makana, set on super-mega-shuffle. Singing along I start thinking, "Wow, this does kinda look like a paperback cover..." Hmmm.

I do a Google to get a bit more background info on the song in an effort to find a fake, yet convincing author name for the fake book and, thanks to the mighty wikipedia, man, did I get a some background! I've probably listened to Paperback Writer at least 100 times in my lifetime and never, ever, did I hear The Beatles singing Frère Jacques in the background, but sure enough, listen to it - it's there!

The more I learn about the Beatles, the trippier life gets.

From 1957 to 1965 legendary photographer W. Eugene Smith made approximately 4,000 hours of recordings on 1,741 reel-to-reel tapes and nearly 40,000 photographs in a loft building in Manhattan's wholesale flower district where major jazz musicians of the day gathered and played their music.

Smith's work has remained in archives until now.

The Jazz Loft Project is dedicated to uncovering the stories behind this legendary moment in American cultural history.

New from Rizzoli books, The Velvet Underground: A New York Art (edited by Johan Kugelberg) collects together a wealth of early photography of the band, alongside a wonderful archive of posters and flyers.

R.E.M. Live At The Olympia

This is not a live album of greatest hits. It doesn't really feel like a live album, either. It feels more like R.E.M.'s gift to its most diehard fans.

For five nights, between June 30 and July 5, 2007, the band performed at the Olympia Theater in Dublin. The purpose was to test out material that would eventually appear on the album Accelerate, released in early 2008.

But what R.E.M. also did was to work harder; to play tighter and more urgently than ever. Rockers who are all around the age of 50 had to go back — way back — to their younger selves to recapture the sound that made the group "the biggest little band in the world," according to Rolling Stone.

Among these 39 live tracks, you'll find neither "Losing My Religion" nor "Everybody Hurts." You won't hear "It's the End of the World as We Know It." Same goes for "Stand" or "Man on the Moon" or "Nightswimming." In fact, to a casual or occasional R.E.M. listener, only a handful of tracks will sound familiar: "So. Central Rain," "Driver 8," "Electrolite," "Drive."

What you get here are the songs R.E.M. and its diehard fans love. "Wolves, Lower," for example, or "Carnival of Sorts" — tracks that were recorded shortly after art student Michael Stipe dropped out of the University of Georgia.

The sound is amazing, I gotta get this!

Above is one of my prized signatures - it's the set list signed by Michael Stipe after their awesome Majestic Theatre show for the 1985 Fables tour. I took Tish and we had perfect 5rd row center floor seats. At the time Maps was my my absolute most favorite REM tune and without any prompting from me Mr. Stipe, for whatever reason, circled it and then signed his name.

One other memorable thing from this show was the white bandage Michael wore on his head for the first part of the show. From what I understand they had rented bikes and he took a little spill while riding around downtown San Antonio.

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" inspiration dies

The woman who inspired the iconic Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" has died, a charity said on Monday.

Lucy O'Donnell was a childhood friend of John Lennon's son Julian, and the song title was inspired by a picture that he had drawn of her at school.

"That's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," Julian explained to his father when he took the picture home.

Many fans believed that the classic 1967 hit, recorded for the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album, was a thinly disguised paean of praise for the hallucinogenic drug LSD.

But O'Donnell, a housewife whose married name was Vodden, revealed two years ago that she had in fact been the source.

Above is Lucy Vodden: She was at nursery school with Julian Lennon.

"I remember Julian and I both doing pictures on a double-sided easel, throwing paint at each other, much to the horror of the classroom attendant," O'Donnell told BBC radio in 2007.

"Julian had painted a picture and on that particular day his father turned up with the chauffeur to pick him up from school."

The St Thomas' Lupus Trust charity said O'Donnell had died aged 46 after losing a fight against the autoimmune disease lupus.

It said Julian and his mother Cynthia, Lennon's first wife, were "shocked and saddened by the loss of Lucy."

"It's so sad that she had finally lost the battle she fought so bravely for so long," said Angie Davidson, the Trust's campaign director.

SPIN Magazine has a sweet little list of The 100 Greatest Bands You've (Probably) Never Heard and they totally nailed it with the closest thing Taco Land ever had to a house band with San Antonio's answer to the cement city Beach Boys, the mighty Big Drag!

BAND NAME: Big Drag
A trio from San Antonio who embodied neighboring Austin’s slacker ethos to a fault, the band melded the Jesus and Mary Chain’s fuzz and the Ramones’ three chords to sunny surf pop to create three-minute koans in the early 90s. Making believers of Yo La Tengo when they rolled through town, YLT appropriated Big Drag’s cover of the Beach Boys’ “Little Honda” (right down to the one-note guitar solo) for their own I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One.

This goes back to 1989. One of my favorite pieces. This was done for the dual celebration of the official unveiling of the Aerosmithsonain at the Hard Rock Cafe + the official PUMP release party. Aerosmith played a good chunk of the new album PUMP live to an estimated crowd of about 150 VIP guest! (J. Giels, dudes from Boston, The Cars, totally crazy cool) Wicked amazing to see them in such perfect form rocking out in such an amazingly intimate setting! Yeah, my Guardian Angle has a backstage pass... I've also got the audio of me getting the above signed by Steven Tyler in between the MTV and Entertainment Tonight interviews. Stay tuned! Thank you Patrick Lyons, Elaine Wood and Steven Tyler - get well soon!

The designer, engineer and inventor would found the Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company, the banner under which he created and produced the first wave of commercially successful electric guitars, basses and amplifiers. Fender’s panache for instrument design reached its pinnacle with his work on the Telecaster guitar, the Fender Precision bass and, most famously, the Stratocaster, the musical instrument that was the central force in defining rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s and ’60s, and whose influence continues to dominate every genre of popular music.

Leo Fender didn’t invent the electric guitar. Six-string slingers had been experimenting with rudimentary amplification systems since the early decades of the 20th century. Always itching for more volume, guitarists were eager to be heard above the drums and other loud instruments in the dance bands of the time.

The first real innovations toward electric axes, however, came with the awarding of two patents for magnetic pickups. The first went to Gibson’s Guy Hart for his company’s Hawaiian guitar design on July 13, 1937, and the second went to Rickenbacker’s George Beauchamp for his horseshoe magnet pickup design featured on his company’s lap steel “frying pan” guitars, on August 10, 1937 — coincidentally, Fender’s 28th birthday.

Ok, flashback...

So, it's 1992 and my buddy Kevin Paetzel, (a fellow Pixies, They Might Be Giants music freak and an amazingly talented copywriter currently working at the Richards Group in Dallas), so Kevin turns me on to this wicked awesome little album called Sweet Love by The Blanks from Houston, featuring Kevin's brother Karl, or Kar as he's know in context with the band. It was actually a cassette tape, not an album.

Sweet Love was produced, written, and performed by The Blanks, recorded at Drum Room Studios, Houston, Texas and Red Oak Studios, Austin, Texas and then mixed at Red Oak Studios, Austin, Texas.

My favorite/lucky numbers are 61 and 9 so I especially dig the fact that the album was finished on the 9th day of the 9th month of 1990.

Long story short, I fall in love with Sweet Love, and fall head over heels with the infectious and incredibly perfect song Sweet Sally! Sweet Sally, features both Kar and the sexy guest vocals of the mysterious Miss Red Sugar and has been stuck in my head for the last 17 years!

So, after sharing my love for Sweet Sally with Kevin who then told his brother Karl about it I was super stoked when Karl asked me if I wanted to contribute my version of Sweet Sally to a tribute album called Glory To The Blanks!

Sweet! Since my first listen I'd been trying to learn the song on my acoustic doing both the male and female vocals and so yeah, I'd love to try and record it!

So Karl comes in from Houston one weekend back in 1995 and we set up his 4 track recorder in my little tree house apartment on Thelma in Olmos Park and after a few beers and about an hour or so of recording we finished my contribution to Glory To the Blanks! This was before I came up with the name Tiki Bongo and so it's under the name Area 51 on the lp.

Anyway - I still totally dig the original Sweet Sally even more now and just this morning Karl sent me the long lost version of my take of Sweet Sally and so here it is in all it's lo-fi glory complete with whistling! I've also posted the priceless original Blanks version so you too can experience the magic of Sweet Sally! Enjoy!

Step 1: Ice down your brew

One of the most common causes of exuberant foamage is warm beer. The exact ideal temperature depends on the style of beer, but your standard American macrobrew will be "tastiest" around 35 degrees. This means you'll want the beer chilling at least two hours ahead of time, and ideally four to five.

The genius who designed your typical keg bucket made it only about half as tall as a standard keg. To ensure that the entire surface area of the keg is cooled -- not just the bottom half -- place a plastic garbage bag in the bucket, then put down a thin layer of ice before dropping in the keg itself. Continue to pack ice inside the garbage bag, all the way to the top of the keg. Check periodically and add ice as needed.

Step 2: Prep your gear
It's just as important to cool down the tap as it is to cool down the keg itself. The amount of carbonation the beer can hold goes down as temperature increases, so letting cold beer hit a warm tube guarantees an avalanche of foam. Fortunately, the solution is pretty easy: just leave the tap on top of the ice around the keg at least an hour or so before you decide to tap.
Before you put tap to keg, make sure that the party tap (the spigot where the beer comes out) is in the closed position. Most taps have a handle that pushes down to lock the tap onto the keg. Others have two flanges that you twist about a quarter-turn. In either case, make sure that the handle or flanges are not in the engaged position. If they are, beer will spray out as soon as you place the tap on the keg.

Step 3: Tap that sucker
Seat the party pump on top of the keg, making sure not to push down on the spring-loaded ball valve (another way to spray beer in your face). Lock the pump onto the keg by rotating it clockwise, then engage the tap by pulling the handle out, then pushing it down, or twisting the flanges. If you see bubbles or foam forming around the tap, something's not seated correctly, so disengage the pump, take it off, and try again.

Step 4: Prep your cup
Scratches inside a glass will serve as nucleation sites where beer turns to foam. If your glass is visibly scratched, use an old bartender's trick and rinse it with water, which will coat the craggy spots. If you're using plastic cups, scratches aren't much of an issue.

Step 5: Patience
No matter how carefully you've followed these steps, the first pint out of a keg will always be foamy. Pour it into a spare glass until the beer starts flowing (foam begets foam, so you'll waste more than you'll drink if you try to pour beer into a foamy glass). You don't have to pump before the first pour, since the keg is already under a great deal of pressure.

Step 6: Master the perfect pour
Too fast or slow a pour will create foam. You can regulate the speed by how much you pump. But always push down the party tap all the way; partially opening it won't slow down the pour, it'll just create foam. It should take 10 to 15 seconds to pour a pint with a good finger or two of foam.

For the first few pints (when the keg is still under pressure), hold the tap and glass at arm's length above your head so that the beer comes out at the proper speed. After that, you can adjust by pumping (to increase the speed of beer flow) or holding the glass and tap over your head (to decrease it). Some taps also have a small pressure release valve, which you can open by pulling on the metal ring attached to it.

Since there's no rule of thumb for the proper number of pumps per pint, it's easiest to do this with a friend rather than going it alone: One person holds the glass at a 45-degree angle and points the spigot toward the side of the glass, gradually turning the glass to vertical to avoid spilling. The other gives the keg a few pumps anytime the glass starts to get too foamy. Just don't overdo it: Too many pumps will -- yep, you guessed it -- create foam as well.

Grand Duchy

Charles Michael Kittredge Thompson IV, aka Black Francis, aka Frank Black, has a reputation as one tough band leader, whether in the TNT-volatile Pixies of the late ’80s and early ’90s or the hardworking roots rockers known as the Catholics. We’ve seen him seriously tear into a hapless drummer on one occasion, and berate a would-be stage diver on another. We’ve heard the firing-by-fax story. He scares us a little.

Still, his latest musical collaborator, Victoria Clarke, cannot be pushed around so easily — she is also his love, his wife, and the mother of his five children. And, indeed, she seems to bring out the best in him, eliciting a playful, relaxed side, not to mention a surprisingly pop-oriented musical style. Together they wrote all the songs, played all the instruments, and recorded all the tracks for Petits Fours, the debut album credited to their joint Grand Duchy project.

Sad news about Heinz Edelmann, he passed away yesterday, July 21st 2009. Edelmann was 75. The photo above is from 1968.

With Heinz Edelmann, the graphic design community looses one of its most innovative practitioners. During his long and prolific career he has created groundbreaking work in the fields of Animation, Advertising and Publishing.

Among the best known of his creations are the illlustrations he did for twen Magazine and Frankfurter Allgemeine Magazine, his book designs for the publishing house Klett Cotta and his posters for the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (West German Broadcasting).

Then there is of course the one chapter in his oeuvre that has made him known worldwide: his stunningly inventive work on the Beatles movie Yellow Submarine.

Edelmann also designed many book covers, including the first German edition of Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings,' and won a contest to design the mascot of the Expo '92 world fair in Spain.
